Celebrating the “Day of the Seafarer 2023”

Today, on the 25th of June, we are celebrating the annual Day of the Seafarer in the year 2023.

The Up-Sailing project and consortium support the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Campaign for this year, which focuses on recognising the role of seafarers in safeguarding the marine environment. This aligns with the World Maritime theme “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on”.

View the statement by Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), in honour of the Day of the Seafarer 2023:

The Day of the Seafarer was established by a resolution that was approved during the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, which aimed to adopt the revised STCW Convention. The primary objective of this initiative is to acknowledge the distinctive impact made by seafarers worldwide on global maritime trade, the global economy, and society at large. The resolution urges Governments, shipping organisations, enterprises, shipowners, and all other relevant parties to actively and effectively promote the Day of the Seafarer and engage in meaningful celebrations.

The United Nations officially designates the Day of the Seafarer as an observance day.

Seafarers dedicate a significant amount of time on the open sea and play a crucial role in safeguarding the maritime environment.
